MEET YOUR HOST, CHEF JENNI LESSARD

"Chef Jenni! She is the spirit behind this tour."
2023 Participant

Raised by a lake in Northern Saskatchewan, Jenni's early love for berry picking and cooking without modern distractions inspired her dream of opening a "fancy" restaurant. Before ninth grade, her culinary journey began with a hamburger stand, Flight Delight, at La Ronge Airport.

Jenni's horizons expanded during her years in the Rocky Mountains, where she savoured the best of Canadian cuisine. 2005, she brought her culinary vision to life by opening New Ground Cafe in Birch Hills, Saskatchewan. As chef, owner, hostess, and server, she created a unique space combining Fair Trade coffee, hearty lunches, and fine dining with live music and art.

Her menu celebrated Saskatchewan's bounty, from Northern ingredients to Prairie staples like flax, hemp hearts, barley, and Saskatoon berries. Jenni's connection to the land, with walks through caraway fields and borage crops, fueled her creativity in the kitchen.
After nearly eight years, Jenni sold her beloved cafe and moved to Saskatoon. She gained a loyal following through catering, speaking, and teaching there. As Chef in Residence at the Saskatoon Farmer’s Market (2013-2016), she crafted innovative recipes showcasing local products.

In 2019, Jenni made history as the first female Métis Executive Chef at Wanuskewin Heritage Park, a renowned Indigenous Interpretive Centre. Today, she continues to break barriers as a culinary consultant and chef for the Han Wi dinner series, sharing her passion for food and storytelling and leaving an indelible mark on the culinary world.

HERE'S WHAT OUR 2023 PARTICIPANTS HAVE TO SAY

"This was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for me. I had the best time, and I can't believe how beautiful Saskatchewan is (not that I didn't think it was)! As cheesy as it sounds, I really felt like I left as a changed person, more connected to the land and the people around me. Thank you x 1000 for this chance. It really is something special."

"I hope to be able to take part in something like this again. It was so awesome. Thank you for the hard work in putting this on."

"My favourite part was seeing the waterfalls and going berry picking. Such great additions that really tied me to the place we were visiting."
