Wildfires made July a hectic month, but highways are now open, fire bans lifted, anglers travelling north and our camps, staff and guests made it through relatively unscathed.
For those of you who hadn't heard, northern Saskatchewan was ravaged by hundreds of forest fires this July. A very dry spring created prime wildfire conditions and before long there was more than 600 wildfires stretching across the northern half of Saskatchewan. Nearly 15,000 people were evacuated from northern communities – many from the La Ronge area close to us.
We were very fortunate at Thompson’s Camps not to be directly threatened by any forest fires – the nearest fires were 8-10 km away from our base camp and outpost camps. None of our camps or facilities were damaged by fires and we were not forced to evacuate. However, the road closures around Missinipe and the "no-flying-conditions" isolated us from the rest of Saskatchewan for nearly 3 weeks.
We’d like to thank our guests for their patience and understanding this past month and we hope that those who missed their July fishing trip will be able to find time later in the season or next year to make it back to Otter Lake.
We’re as glad as anyone to be back open to business and we’re all looking forward to an excellent August and September of Fall fishing!
Odie - our long-time guide and pilot - and a few of our dock-hands made trips to Utie Island on Otter Lake to extinguish some of the fire hotspots,
Introducing the F3T Tour!
The Fly Fishing Film Tour (F3T) is the largest fly fishing film tour in North America, hitting almost 140 U.S. cities and the major centres in Canada, Europe and Southeast Asia.
In late June, ADI partnered with Beattie Outdoor Productions to produce a film for the 2016 F3T Tour to showcase Selwyn Lake's legendary trophy pike fly-fishing!
We're beyond excited to showcase Selwyn's trophy pike fishery to the fly-fishing community of the world. Keep your eyes and ears peeled for upcoming teasers, pictures, film tour dates and the film release!
"What the Deck?"
What’s better than barbequing and hanging out on the deck with your buddies after a long day of fishing on Otter Lake?
One of our biggest missions at Thompson’s Camps is to continually improve our facilities and many of our A-Side decks were due for an upgrade!
Last season, we rebuilt the deck, resided the cabins and built an overhanging roof on Cabins 1A, 2A and 3A and this year we’ve built larger decks with benches on Cabins 8A and 10A.
We’re planning on rebuilding the remaining decks on the A-Side in the next 12-24 months. Stay tuned.
Before and After Photos of the A-Side Decks
August and September continue to have many openings for bookings. Many of us that live and work at Thompson’s Camps enjoy the Fall season the most: awesome colors, cooler temperatures, great fishing (especially our fly-out lake trout fishing) and – best of all – no bugs! Never tried a Fall fishing trip? Give us a ring and we’ll make something work. You won’t regret it.
